‘2001’ was a project by Wolfgang Staehle – on 8 September 2001, two cameras would automatically take a photo of the Manhattan skyline every four seconds. The images would be sent over the internet to two projectors in a New York gallery and form a real time mural. Three days into the project, he unwittingly recorded the airliner that was crashed into the North tower of the World Trade Centre. The story of these and other images and how they shaped our understanding and interpretation of the events of 9/11, is told in David Friend’s book ‘Watching The World Change‘.
